Pet hair will eat up your time. Someone tells you they have some pet hair and you walk up to the vehicle to see a ton of hair all over. It’s going to take you an hour or more to clean it all out and if you don’t add an extra charge you’re doing it for free.

Many mobile detailers will add a charge for pet hair. When we looked through 30 mobile detailers from 21 different states we found pet hair to be one of the most added charges. Below are the prices and how they go about adding it.

8 Companies stated that there is an extra charge for pet hair. But did not state a price. Some of them said something along the lines of “we will quote you when we get there”. Or it may increase your final price by adding a step.

One company will charge for heavy pet hair. But not light. Which we think is a good idea. Not every dog sheds tons of hair.

Ways to add it to your prices

There are a few ways you can add this to your prices.

A flat add-on

Add a charge to your package price. Like “Pet hair removal $35”. This allows you to charge one price. Whether it’s a little bit or tons of hair.

A range

You can charge a range of prices based on how much pet hair there is. This could be something like $30-$100. Or a lower price for light and higher price for heavy. Make sure you describe each price so the customer knows which they will be getting.

Quoted on site

State that you charge extra for pet hair. And leave it open ended. Some of the companies did this. Just let the customer know you will charge for it. But don’t give a price.

Whatever you choose just make sure it’s on your price list. If they know about it they’re less likely to mind paying. If you tell them when you’re at their house it’s going to seem like you’re trying to rip them off.

Ask before you quote

Make sure you ask about pet hair before you give a customer a price.

  • Do you have any animals that travel in your vehicle? Where do they ride?
  • Have them send you pictures of the seats and trunk area.
  • You can also add this to your booking form if you have one. So they know upfront that you charge for pet hair.

If there is more pet hair than what they told you let the customer know before you begin. You can check out our blog post on answering “how much for a detail?” messages to see an example message.

Pet hair goes hand in hand with other prices

When we looked through these 30 price lists. There were a few that had similar things that they would charge for. Like sand, excessive dirt/mud, staining, mold and bodily fluids.

Some examples from those price lists were $25 for sand, $15 for excessive dirt/mud, $40-$75 for staining. Bodily fluids started at $100 and went up. One even had bodily fluids at $1,000,000 (their way of saying no). So if you’re going to charge for any of these things. Make sure to list them on your price list.
